A Unique Getaway in Split on a Croatia Sailing Break
The largest city on the Dalmatian Coast and the second largest in Croatia, Split is not short on things to do. The UNESCO World Heritage Site historic centre, large museums and fantastic nightlife make for an amazing experience whatever your tastes. However, the cobbled streets hold the potential for a much more unique experience that, combined with the traditional tourist hotspots, will ensure a visit to Split is a distinctly memorable one!
Get Lost in Split Market
As markets go, Split’s is a cut above most. Set in the most picturesque of surroundings, beside the Roman Palace’s Silver Gate, the daily market is a local fixture that is open from the crack of dawn to the setting of the sun. It is here that you can find anything and everything you need for your Croatia sailing holiday and so much more, from fresh foodstuffs to trivial trinkets.
All about the Art
It seems almost a given that a city can’t truly be a great one without some sort of homage to art, whether local artists or international masters. Split is no exception, with galleries galore and a particularly vibrant contemporary art scene. The city is seen as the place for Croatian modern art and the best place to find this is at the Split Art Gallery. Located in what is known as the ‘Old Hospital’, the gallery has over 400 works from 1950s paintings to video and new media pieces.
Cool Kasuni Beach
Bacvice may be the beach with the biggest reputation, but it is far from Split’s only seafront hotspot. Travel west from the Old Town and you will reach Kasuni and the adjoining Zvoncac Beach. Here art lovers can peruse the wonders of the Mestrovic Gallery, the museum dedicated to Croatia’s greatest sculptor, while the city’s younger hipsters flock for the waterside clubs. Boasting a constant stream of the world’s top DJs, no one could deny that Kasuni Beach is one of the most happening places in town!
