Getting To Your Croatia Tour: Visit Zadar

Preparing for your imminent sailing trip requires some forethought and planning on your behalf, in order to organise your travel to and from Croatia. We are always happy to help and point you in the right direction, and so we would like to recommend an alternative to flying into Split. Although flights into Split are certainly the easiest to pick up your Croatia sailing tour, they have been know to become quite expensive. The suggested alternative would be flying into Zadar, situated a mere hour’s drive from Split.

Flights to Zadar are priced well, and you might want to think about staying a while longer in this beautiful ancient city, as an addition to your sailing holiday. Zadar is probably not the first city that comes to mind when you think of Croatia- not with the increasingly popular Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split. Zadar (ancient Zara), is a roman era city with, believe it or not, marble traffic-free streets following the old Roman street plan, still containing some Roman ruins and several medieval churches. This is the perfect place to throw out the guide books and let the city inspire you to wander the narrow alleyways of the Varos area, savour a glass of Malvasia wine in one of the local noisy taverns or stumble upon one of the city’s many architectural treasures.

The 16th-century fortifications still shield the city on the landward side, with high walls running along the harbour, while the tree-lined promenades are perfect for a lazy stroll. By night, Zadar’s large student population pours into the town’s bars and cafés while their parents sample one of the town’s growing numbers of fine restaurants. Of course the three major music festivals taking place in this city are great draws as well: Soundwave, Garden Festival and Electric Elephant.

Today Zadar is a preserved monument of the origins of Croatian civilization and culture, packed with archives, museums and libraries; it is the keeper of literary and musical treasure. The oldest University among Croatians was established in 1396, and also where the first Croatian novel and the first newspapers in the Croatian language were created.

Zadar is a perfect stop off on your sailing trip, and as Ryan Air has established new base there they offer a large variety of flights from across the UK to this destination.
