Now there is one more reason to make sure you get to Greece this summer for a sailing holiday. The Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, has once again proven it reduces by 30% the risk of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease, according to a recently published report in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The findings were based on the first major clinical trial to measure the diet’s effect on heart risks. The magnitude of the diet’s benefits surprised experts,  writes Gina Kolata in the New York Times, adding that the study ended early, after almost five years, because the unexpected results were so clear it was deemed unnecessary to continue.
