The municipality of Thira, or the official name of the picturesque island of Santorini, has declared 2013 as the “Year of Gastronomy.” Of course the island is known primarily for its unique volcanic landscapes, archaeological sites and distinct architecture.

Santorini After Sailing Holiday

MedSailors now offers guests the opportunity to travel to Santorini via ferry with a transfer to the ferry terminal. Guests will be able to catch a ferry to Santorini upon return of their sailing holiday to Athens the Friday and wake up in beautiful Santorini on the Saturday! As the ferry time tables and prices have not been published by the Greek service providers, we are not able to confirm the final costs, and these details will be posted on our website as they are released.

MedSailors has long expounded the delights of Grecian cuisine, and now the Santorini authorities are promoting local products such as wine, cherry tomatoes, yellow split peas (called fava in Greece) and capers. These ingredients are what lends Greek food such an appealing and unique flavour. Although Greek food is already famous and appreciated in Greece and abroad, this project aims to to expand the tourism product and extend the tourist season in Greece.

An event for the presentation of the initiative was held at the Acropolis Museum in Athens on January 16. The mayor of Thira, Nikolaos Zorzos, announced that every cultural event organised by the municipality will revolve around this central theme. The official inauguration of Santorini’s Year of Gastronomy will be held at the Bellonio Cultural Foundation in Fira on February 3rd, and will thus be well under way by the time you explore Santorini post Greek island sailing holiday.
