Summer Festival Fun in Split on a Croatia Sailing Holiday
Split, the second largest city in Croatia, is always a fantastic place to visit offering everything from seaside to cityscape, culture to clubbing. Come festival time, the city only gets better. There are a number of annual celebrations that take place throughout the year in the city, but it is its summertime schedule that really takes the cake. Below are some of the best.
Split Summer Festival
Started over 50 years ago and held every mid-July to mid-August, the Split Summer Festival is a celebration of theatre, dance and music and the stand-out festival on Split’s calendar. Over its month long span, events take place in Split’s historic squares, National Theatre and an array of other venues, offering ballet performances, modern dance shows, operas, concert and even marionette theatre shows to enjoy.
Discotheque Riva can lay claim to being the world’s biggest open-air disco and takes place each August on Split’s stunning downtown waterfront- perfectly located for anyone coming into town on a Croatia sailing break. With the streets transformed into one gigantic dance floor, visitors and locals can come together by the waterfront and beneath the palm trees to enjoy one of the most spectacular music events in the Mediterranean.
Split Film Festival
As the summer draws to an end, the Split Film Festival takes centre stage. The festival, which is one of the oldest film and video events in Croatia, is a showcase for alternative and independent film talent. Visitors can attend special screenings of films, as well as take part in workshops and experience a range of interactive media, performances and discussions all centred on film and video.
