There are many factors that go into getting the most enjoyment out of a holiday destination. Choosing the right type of holiday is obviously one, and when it comes to Turkey sailing is a choice that is hard to beat. Sometimes, a few interesting snippets of background information can also help you to better appreciate your destination. So here are some things you may not know about Turkey:

Bringers of Coffee

Turkey was the country that first introduced Europeans to coffee. The drink itself originates in Africa, but Turkey was the first European country to take a liking to it. It then introduced the Italians to the beverage, and from there it quickly spread across the continent. The Turkish are still associated with a love of coffee just as the British are with tea, and it is easy to find a delicious, high-quality brew in the country.

A Proud History of Gender Equality

The Hittites were an ancient civilisation inhabiting modern-day Turkey, and are mentioned numerous times in the Bible. It is through secular historical accounts, however, that we know they were a civilisation that took gender equality very seriously as early as 1750BC, when feminism was still millennia away. Sadly, Turkey’s record of complete equality hasn’t survived completely unbroken over time, but the country has still remained ahead of its time on women’s rights. In the modern era, it was one of the first countries to grant women the vote.
