Twelve Foods You MUST Try When Visiting Italy

Shall I start with the obvious?

1 + 2. Pizza and spaghetti

Both pretty swoon worthy and I’m sure you can already imagine how delicious they are when made the traditional Italian way! However Italy’s menus are so packed full of other delicious, perhaps less well known dishes, that you’ll be forgiven if you get a little distracted.

If you visit Italy and you don’t sample some of their most famous foods, did you even really go to Italy at all? Well, the answer is, of course, YES!

3. Cacciucco

Imagine a combination of fresh seafood, that’s cooked slowly in a broth made from chillies, tomatoes, garlic and sage, served in a bowl with a side of crusty bread. Are you feeling hungry yet?

4. Torrone

Think nougat but creamier, with a citrus twist and a sprinkle of lightly toasted nuts. You might even stumble across torrone that has been dipped in chocolate, which might actually be even better than the original. But who can really say for sure? It’s a delicious sweet treat either way.

5. Ribollita

A dish with humble origins, but this hearty soup thickened with bread will keep you warm on any chilly evenings.

6. Focaccia di Recco

Partial to the odd cheese toastie here and there? This thin piece of focaccia has some of the creamiest cheese you will ever taste in the middle of it. And yes, it really is pretty much the best thing ever.

7. Bigoli

A bowl of thick noodles that have enough texture so that the roast duck and vegetable sauce sticks perfectly to them, all covered with a covering of Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. What a beautiful invention.

8. Risi e bisi

I know that rice and peas may not sound like it could be one of the best dishes Italy has to offer, but this unassuming dish proves that it’s difficult to argue with simplicity.

9. Granita

Imagine sitting in the sunshine, watching the world go by with a serving of cold granita in hand keeping you cool. Sounds pretty perfect, huh?

10. Carbonara

It’s 10/10 impossible to go wrong with a bowl of fresh pasta, pancetta, Pecorino cheese and olive oil.

11. Arancini

Balls of rice filled with mozzarella and tomatoes, covered in breadcrumbs before being fried until golden brown. I know, right?! Heavenly.

12. Gelato

Oh, and don’t forget to sample the gelato. At every opportunity! Seriously.
