Useful Cultural Tips for Croatia Sailing Holidays

There are many wonderful ways to see Croatia, and sailing is among the very best. However, as with any destination, it can be useful to know a few key points about the local culture that may affect the way you behave on your visit. Some useful tips for getting on with the locals while enjoying your Croatia sailing holiday include the following.

Meeting People
Be polite and a little bit formal when you meet and introduce yourself to local people. If you get to know a Croatian quite well over the course of your holiday, wait for them to initiate any familiarities. For example, friends may greet each other the “continental” way with a hug and a kiss on the cheek, but don’t initiate this greeting yourself. When that isn’t part of your culture, it is hard to judge when you have become sufficiently familiar.

Dining Out
If you don’t try the Croatian cuisine in the wealth of local restaurants, you will definitely be missing out. There are a couple of basic rules of etiquette you should follow while dining in Croatia. If you are part of a group, wait for everyone to be served and ready to start eating before you begin yourself. When you are done, leave a small amount of food on your plate. This signals that you have finished and that the portions were sufficient. Other than this, dining in Croatia is a very relaxed, informal affair and you are unlikely to make any major missteps in a public restaurant (as opposed to a formal dinner party).
