To celebrate International Pancake Day, we’ve cooked up a tantalizing article for you and we’re revealing the best kept (and tastiest) secret of a sailing holiday in Turkey.

Imagine this: You are basking in the bright warm sun on your yacht while relaxing with your boat mates to the slight rocking of the sea. All around you are beautiful turquoise waters in one of the many secluded bays, and ancient ruins cling the cliffs nearby. Everything is almost perfect. There’s just one thing missing, one thing you desire to make life perfect — pancakes!

Pancakes in paradise are pretty much the perfect combination, but when that craving hits while in such a remote location, what is one to do?

Well, while you’re sailing in Turkey you’ll find out there is no reason to fret about that certain snack craving because Turkey has the cure to all of your doughy desires.

Meet the Turkey pancake boats.

Wait, there are actual pancake boats in Turkey? Yup!

Best. Thing. Ever.

And better yet, you don’t have to do a single thing except decide whether you want savoury or sweet, and if you want seconds! 😋

Gözleme, or Turkish pancakes, are a traditional village dish found all around Turkey, and now even commonly found in cities. Unlike American-style pancakes or crepes, these have a tasty charred flavour accompanying them from the large flat griddle they are cooked on and the various ingredients to choose from.

But there isn’t anything like having a pancake on a boat made on a boat!

The Turkish pancake boats will make rounds to various bays so keep your eyes peeled and give them a wave when the craving hits. They cruise over on an old wooden boat decked out with a pancake griddle and heaps of ingredients to choose from. And of course a lovely old Turkish lady/master pancake chef.

But the big question still remains, what should you put on your tasty morsel whipped up by the pancake lady?

Let’s start with the basics: Savoury or Sweet?

Starting with the savoury lovers, you’ll have a few main ingredients to choose from:

  • Loads of cheese
  • Spinach
  • Onions
  • Peppers
  • Chilli flakes

Personally, our favourite combo for the savoury pancake is the everything pancake. And don’t hold back on that glorious melty cheese, please! And if you like a little heat, the chilli flakes add the perfect punch.

For those of you with a bit of a sweet tooth, the sweet Turkish pancake will rock your taste buds. On board the pancake boat, they’ll usually have:

  • Banana
  • Nutella
  • Chocolate Sauce
  • Strawberries
  • Honey

Again, if it were up to us, EVERYTHING is a good choice for the sweet pancake.

Sorry if we have you salivating a bit, but we’re over here drooling and dreaming of summer to come so we can spend our days sailing and snacking our way around the turquoise coast too!

In the meantime, here is a way to cull those cravings until you can hop on board. We’ve dished up an easy pancake recipe so you can make your own!

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

MedSailors Pancake Recipe

  • 1 Cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 Cup of milk
  • 1/2 Cup of water
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of butter, melted
  1. Whisk the flour and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Slowly add the milk and water while stirring. Add the salt and butter and beat until a smooth mixture.
  2. Heat the non-stick pan to medium heat, and coat the pan with butter. Oil can work, but it risks making the pancake to oily. Pour the batter onto the pan, about 1/4 cup, and spread in in a circular motion so it’s evenly dispersed.
  3. Cook the pancake for about 2 minutes until the bottom is a light brown, then flip gently using a spatula to loosen.
  4. If you are having a savoury cheese-filled pancake, add the cheese after flipping so it gets all wonderfully gooey. You’ll thank us.

NOTE: The first one never comes out perfect, but don’t give up!

And voila, now it’s up to you to decide what to pack that pancake with. Since you’ll be at home, you can deck out the pancake with anything you can dream up, so go wild! Just make sure to share your creations with us!

The gözleme, or Turkish pancake, will look and taste quite a bit different than our recipe because we wanted to keep it simple, and leave the delicious surprise waiting for you when you get to try the real deal!

While you sail Turkey, you’ll notice small boats zipping around from one bay to the next — from ice-cream boats to coffee boats and even massive gullets that have a whole market in them. But personally, we think the pancake boats are the coolest.
