How To Make The Most Out of One Day In Athens

One of the best parts of a Greek island sailing holiday is being able to soak up the views and culture in so many stunning locations. With so much to see, having a plan (yes, even a vague one if you prefer to keep hold of your spontaneity!) is a must if you want to make the most out of every second of your time in Athens.

You Must See the Acropolis on Your Sailing Trip

If you visit Athens on your sailing trip and don’t visit the Acropolis, did you really even visit Athens at all? The view from the top is difficult to beat, so we reckon it’s an absolute must-visit location! The main entrance tends to get very crowded, so head around to the south entrance to avoid the majority of the seemingly endless queues.

Marvellous Museums

It’s no secret that the Acropolis is full of replica objects. If they’ve survived this long you can’t blame anyone for wanting to ensure they’ll still be around in a few more thousand years, right?! Visit the impressive Acropolis Museum if you want to see the real deal, but if replicas are enough for you, pop into one of the other museums in Athens to see some beautiful ancient art and important cultural objects.

The Plaka

The Old Town is full of character, quirky shops, and restaurants with menus bursting with delicious traditional Greek cuisine. Stop off to sample some spanakopita or baklava with fresh Greek yoghurt and locally produced honey before heading out to explore the Tower of Winds, which was used as a meteorology station in the first century.

Don’t Forget Your Greek Island Sailing Holiday Souvenirs!

Right next to the Plaka is the famous Monastiraki market, and if you want to purchase a souvenir to remember your time in Athens by or a pick up a few gifts for your loved ones back home, this is a great place to have a browse. You can also even practice your haggling skills here if you’re feeling brave!
