Known as the cradle of Western Civilization, Greece is a country you should definitely tick off your bucket list. And, there’s something here for everyone. With famous archaeological sites, exquisite Mediterranean food and breathtaking landscapes; it’s no wonder Greece is a dream holiday of a lifetime. If that didn’t get you excited, then the gorgeous Mediterranean weather, fabulous beaches with crystal clear water and epic rugged coastline surely will!

Athens is an amazing city to visit and is considered the heart of Greece. There is so much to do and see! So, we’ve put together an itinerary for your perfect day trip in Athens.

1# The Acropolis – An Absolute Must See

One of the top attractions to visit is the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn all about Athens history and visit some of the iconic ruins overlooking the stunning city below. Highlights to see here are:

  • The Parthenon
  • Porch of The Caryatids At The Erechtheion
  • Temple Of Olympian Zeus
  • The Ancient Agora Of Athens

2# Wander The Streets Of Plaka

A house in Plaka

Plaka is one of the oldest and picturesque neighbourhoods in Athens. Located at the base of the Acropolis, walking through the streets is the best way to admire its charm and beautiful architecture. And we’ve found a really beautiful part of it too! Don’t miss walking down the Plaka Stairs (Mnisikleous) and have a coffee stop at Yiasemi. Recommend by locals, you’ll be able to sit outside on the steps and people-watch while soaking in the gorgeous surroundings. Not far from here is Andrianou street which is filled with a variety of souvenir shops, a must see for those who need a keepsake to take home.

3# Why Not Try Some Authentic Greek Food At Filomouson Etairias Square

If you get hungry or need to quench your thirst (again), head right into the heart of Plaka. Here you’ll find a bunch of traditional restaurants and cafes. And if you haven’t tried a Gyro yet (for the meat lovers), or a mean Greek salad – nows your chance!

4# Visit The Incredible National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum

About a 30 minute walk away is the National Archaeological Museum. Trust us, you won’t want to skip this one! Known for housing some of the best collections in the whole world, there’s a an array of Greek art, antiques and artefacts to admire. As it’s the largest museum in Greece, we’ve put together a few recommendations on what exhibits we reckon you should see. Because let’s face it, with 11,000 masterpieces, you could be there all day.

  • The Sculpture Collection
  • The Vases and Minor Objects Collection
  • The Metallurgy Collection
  • The Cypriot Collection
  • The Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection

*Don’t forget to see the gold Mask of Agamemnon – the most famous gold artefact in the museum!

5# Rest Those Tired Feet And Experience A Traditional Hammam

Towels and oil for a Greek Hammam

What better way to unwind from a long day of walking than to relax in a rejuvenating steam bath? And, there are a number of bathhouses to choose from! Prepare yourself for an ultimate pamper session and enjoy this truly authentic experience. From a traditional hamman to a variety of massages and treatments on offer, you’ll leave feeling totally refreshed and ready for the evening ahead.

6# Watch An Evening Movie At An Outdoor Cinema

The Acropolis at night

There’s quite a few open-air cinemas in Athens, but we reckon the Cine Paris Plaka is the best one to check out. Not only will you have the stunning view of the lit up Acropolis at night, but it’s one of the oldest open-air cinemas in Athens. With an epic snack bar stocked with beers, Greek pizzas and hot dogs, whats not to like? Don’t worry the movies are in English too!

7# Swing By Agia Irini Square And Meet Local Athenians

The Church of Saint Eirini

For the history buffs visit the Church of Saint Eirini. The square is important to Athenians because there was once the main cathedral of Athens at the very same location. These days Agia Irini Square is known as the hipster part of Athens. You are sure to have a great time in this lively area because it’s always busy night or day! Word has it κωστα – Kostas has the best Souvlaki in town! Whether you want to grab a quick bite or have a few drinks, go clubbing or listen to some jazzy tunes, there’s plenty to do in this trendy area.

Greece also provides excellent yachting conditions and what better way to see the magic of the Greek islands than onboard the MedSailors Greece Saronic tour. And, if you haven’t booked your MedSailors Greece Saronic tour yet, then what are you waiting for?
